{"id":1696,"date":"2017-09-18T12:44:43","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T20:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/?p=1696"},"modified":"2017-09-20T08:46:10","modified_gmt":"2017-09-20T16:46:10","slug":"irma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/2017\/09\/18\/irma\/","title":{"rendered":"Irma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My family, living in Saint Martin (French West Indies) was hit by the Hurricane Irma on September 5th, 2017.<\/p>Today, after ten days without communications (but news here and there), I was finally able to talk with them, and it&#8217;s quite a relief to learn that <strong>they are safe now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1697\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stmartin.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1697\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1697\" class=\"wp-image-1697 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stmartin-1024x550.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset over Saint Martin after the storm (unknow credit)\" width=\"580\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stmartin-1024x550.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stmartin-300x161.jpg 300w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stmartin-768x413.jpg 768w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/stmartin.jpg 1372w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunset over Saint Martin after the storm (unknow credit)<\/p>\n<\/div><p><!--more--><\/p>The hurricane was the most powerful recorded in history, and it completely destroyed the island (including my parents&#8217; house and business), while causing a lot of civil unrest in the aftermath, without food or water available for the population.<\/p>While we live in a world which is becoming more and more connected, it seems that in the name of economic efficiency we are losing useful tools when things wreak havoc: memories of childhood include FM radio and flashlight, while now the single-dependency on smartphones makes the information somehow more difficult to gather.
