{"id":1701,"date":"2017-08-20T13:15:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T21:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/?p=1701"},"modified":"2020-12-01T23:01:12","modified_gmt":"2020-12-02T07:01:12","slug":"als-u","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/2017\/08\/20\/als-u\/","title":{"rendered":"ALS-U"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some may have been wondering what I have been up to lately!<br \/>\nAt the beginning of the year, I started working on the <a href=\"https:\/\/als.lbl.gov\/als-u\/als-u-approach\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/als.lbl.gov\/als-u\/als-u-approach\/', 'ALS-U']);\" >ALS-U<\/a> project, which is the\u00a0<strong> upgrade of the Advanced Light Source<\/strong>, the main synchrotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The goal is to improve the facility with a Diffraction-Limited Storage Ring (DLSR), in order to increase the brilliance of the beam, so as allow scientists from all over the world to perform the most precise experiments, allowing bright and full coherent beams with diameters as small as 10 nanometers \u2013 or twice the width of a strand of DNA. The funding for this project (&gt;$200M) is contingent on a <a href=\"https:\/\/science.energy.gov\/~\/media\/bes\/besac\/pdf\/Reports\/BESAC_Facility_Upgrade_Assessment_Approved_June_9_2016.pdf\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','download','https:\/\/science.energy.gov\/~\/media\/bes\/besac\/pdf\/Reports\/BESAC_Facility_Upgrade_Assessment_Approved_June_9_2016.pdf']);\" >vote in the US senate<\/a>, and while the current political climate is not in favor of science, upgrading the ALS to become the reclaim leadership in Generation IV light sources garners bi-partisan support.<\/p>GenIV light sources are the next generation (see &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1038\/nphoton.2016.251\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1038\/nphoton.2016.251', 'The next ten years of X-ray science']);\" >The next ten years of X-ray science<\/a>&#8221; in Nature Photonics 11, 12-14 (2017) &#8211; paywall) in synchrotron science, featuring a fully coherent, <strong>diffraction-limited x-ray beam<\/strong> <span class=\"_Tgc\">\u2014<\/span> meaning that the performance of the tool is <strong>ultimately limited by physics<\/strong>. Once you get there, there is very little you can do to improve the properties of the light source!<\/p>The difficulty of the project is that every element requires<strong> extreme precision and stability<\/strong>, what requires careful design and diagnostic tools. For instance, the meter-long mirrors that are used must have error figures in polishing better than 1nm\u00a0<span class=\"_Tgc\">\u2014<\/span> basically at the atomic scale: if you were to picture a beach, the flatness of that beach (~1km) would have to be a hundred times much better than the size of a single grain of sand (100\u03bcm). This is crazy, yet it can be done through Elastic Emission Machining (EEM), where you basically launch rubber balls at the mirror for months to flatten it out (abrasion no longer works, since a nanometer is already comparable to the size of the lattice.)<br \/>\nAt the same time, the first mirror in the beam will have to withstand heatloads in the tens of kilowatts.<\/p>Even with the best efforts in cooling designs, <strong>monitoring the aberrations<\/strong> for <strong>active correction of the beam<\/strong> is likely to be required, and that&#8217;s part of what I&#8217;m working on, as part of the <strong>Wavefront Preserving Mirror<\/strong> project, a joint project between APS, NSLS-II, LCLS and the ALS.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1705\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/deformable_mirror_NSLS-II.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1705\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1705\" class=\"wp-image-1705 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/deformable_mirror_NSLS-II-1024x377.jpg\" alt=\"deformable_mirror_NSLS-II\" width=\"580\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/deformable_mirror_NSLS-II-1024x377.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/deformable_mirror_NSLS-II-300x110.jpg 300w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/deformable_mirror_NSLS-II-768x283.jpg 768w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/deformable_mirror_NSLS-II.jpg 1548w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two deformable Kirpatrick-Baez mirror at NSLS-II<\/p>\n<\/div><p>Soft X-Ray is important because it allows chemical specificity since it corresponds to the K-edge (i.e. the energy needed to ionize electrons from the inner electron shell of atoms) of many atoms. The problem is of course the these radiations get very strongly absorbed, and thus are very difficult to produce. [Here is a list of all the cool things this is meant to allow &#8211; science opportunity]<\/p>There is a global push in the world for <strong>generation IV light sources<\/strong>, which are divided between <strong>DLSR synchrotrons<\/strong> and <strong>Free-Electron Lasers<\/strong>. Among synchrtrons, the first (and only) Gen IV light source is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxiv.lu.se\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.maxiv.lu.se\/', 'MaxIV']);\" >MaxIV<\/a> in Sweden, operated by Lund university. Other light sources around the world are staged for an upgrade, like SLS-II in Switzerland or Soleil in France.<br \/>\nFree-Electron Lasers constitute the other part of GenIV (There are few in the world, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.slac.stanford.edu\/sites\/lcls_public\/Pages\/status.aspx\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/portal.slac.stanford.edu\/sites\/lcls_public\/Pages\/status.aspx', 'LCLS']);\" >LCLS<\/a> at SLAC\/Stanford, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elettra.trieste.it\/lightsources\/fermi\/machine.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.elettra.trieste.it\/lightsources\/fermi\/machine.html', 'Fermi']);\" >Fermi<\/a> (at Elettra) in Italy, <a href=\"http:\/\/xfel.riken.jp\/eng\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/xfel.riken.jp\/eng\/', 'SACLA']);\" >SACLA<\/a> in Japan, and the brand new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.ch\/swissfel\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.psi.ch\/swissfel\/', 'SwissFEL']);\" >SwissFEL<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/europe-s-x-ray-laser-fires-up-1.22519\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/europe-s-x-ray-laser-fires-up-1.22519', 'European XFEL']);\" >European XFEL<\/a> in Hamburg.) FELs are exciting for they produce intense (~10GW) flashes of light (~10fs) allow the study of very small time-scale phenomenon. A lot of very interesting phenomena can be studied that way, the drawback is that oftentimes samples get destoyed by the measurement, and that only one experiment can be carried out at a time.
