The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exploratorium.edu\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.exploratorium.edu\/', 'Exploratorium']);\" >Exploratorium<\/a> (Pier 15) has a lot of very neat experiments that do have an artistic component to them, while the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calacademy.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.calacademy.org\/', 'Cal Academy of Science']);\" >Cal Academy of Science<\/a> (Golden Gate Park) sometimes run events based on art and technology.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>For 2018-2019, the French Embassy is assembling a series of events around arts and science called <a href=\"http:\/\/aftertomorrow2018.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/aftertomorrow2018.com\/', 'After Tomorrow']);\" >After Tomorrow<\/a>. There&#8217;s been events at the Cal Academy of Arts and Gray Area, but oftentimes they&#8217;re here to promote a French artist, rather than giving a systematic treatment of art and science.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There&#8217;s also <a href=\"http:\/\/leonardo.info\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/leonardo.info\/', 'Leonardo\/ISAST']);\" >Leonardo\/ISAST<\/a> (International Society for Art, Science and Technology), which is based in the Bay Area and organizes event, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasertalks.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.lasertalks.com\/', 'LASER']);\" >LASER<\/a> talks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardo.info\/civicrm\/event\/register?id=115&reset=1\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.leonardo.info\/civicrm\/event\/register?id=115&amp;reset=1', 'The Convening']);\" >The Convening<\/a> (for their 50th birthday.)<\/div>\n<h3>At Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory<\/h3>\n<div>There is a large source of content at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbl.gov\/about\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.lbl.gov\/about\/', 'Berkeley Lab']);\" >Berkeley Lab<\/a>, especially given it&#8217;s the host of national user facilities:<\/div>\n<div>the <a href=\"https:\/\/als.lbl.gov\/about\/about-the-als\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/als.lbl.gov\/about\/about-the-als\/', 'Advanced Light Source']);\" >Advanced Light Source<\/a> (x-ray imaging), the <a href=\"http:\/\/foundry.lbl.gov\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/foundry.lbl.gov\/', 'Molecular Foundry']);\" >Molecular Foundry<\/a> (electron microscopy), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nersc.gov\/about\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.nersc.gov\/about\/', 'NERSC']);\" >NERSC<\/a> (computer simulations) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jgi.doe.gov\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/jgi.doe.gov\/', 'Joint Genome Institute']);\" >Joint Genome Institute<\/a> (biology), each with over 1000 users per year from all over the world, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/19\/books\/review\/big-science-by-michael-hiltzik.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/19\/books\/review\/big-science-by-michael-hiltzik.html', 'rich history']);\" >rich history<\/a> (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbl.gov\/nobelists\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.lbl.gov\/nobelists\/', '12 Nobel Prize laureates']);\" >12 Nobel Prize laureates<\/a>). Over the past year I&#8217;ve tried to consolidate the material available. I even ventured into this myself; the following picture was made by superimposing partially coherent light on atomic scale variations of a substrate seen with an x-ray microscope (a tribute to &#8220;Suprematist Composition: White on White\u201d by Vladimir Malevich):<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1976\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sharp-malevich.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1976\" class=\"wp-image-1976 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sharp-malevich-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sharp-malevich-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sharp-malevich-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sharp-malevich-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sharp-malevich-768x768.jpg 768w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sharp-malevich.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Incoherent on Coherent (Antoine Wojdyla, 2015)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>I believe there are many cool things in tandem with <a href=\"https:\/\/bampfa.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/bampfa.org\/', 'BAM\/PFA']);\" >BAM\/PFA<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfmoma.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.sfmoma.org\/', 'SFMOMA']);\" >SFMOMA<\/a>, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/calperformances.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/calperformances.org\/', 'CalPerf']);\" >CalPerf<\/a>: the music venue should try to get closer to what people are doing in the EECS department &#8212; and I believe the University of Michigan should do the same with <a href=\"https:\/\/ums.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/ums.org\/', 'UMS']);\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/ums.org\/&source=gmail&ust=1539472015958000&usg=AFQjCNHisHMdbGCzgDJWJ-0tuwJPQ25utQ\">UMS<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>I&#8217;m not very familiar with what happens at UC Berkeley or Stanford in that field, apart from are a few independent events, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceatcal.berkeley.edu\/artinscience\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/scienceatcal.berkeley.edu\/artinscience\/', 'this one']);\" >this one<\/a>. I would love to invite <a href=\"https:\/\/speakers.acm.org\/speakers\/stork_6963\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/speakers.acm.org\/speakers\/stork_6963', 'David Stork']);\" >David Stork<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edwardtufte.com\/tufte\/books_vdqi\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.edwardtufte.com\/tufte\/books_vdqi', 'Edward Tufte']);\" >Edward Tufte<\/a> and others, and I&#8217;m sure that there are many ways to bring in other national labs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bell-labs.com\/about\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.bell-labs.com\/about\/', 'Bell Labs']);\" >Bell Labs<\/a> (Bell Labs researchers basically fled to national labs when things went down, but there seems to be a revival nowadays.)<\/div>\n<div>And there&#8217;s of course some art on novel unusual media (<a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/2017\/06\/04\/wafer-art\/\">silicon wafers or EUV photomasks)<\/a> that could be used!<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a short list of Art &#038; Science resources in the Bay Area.
