This is <a href=\"http:\/\/datapropaganda.com\/2016\/07\/15\/inside-disruption\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/datapropaganda.com\/2016\/07\/15\/inside-disruption\/', 'well analyzed']);\" >well analyzed<\/a> in Bernard Stiegler &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.editionslesliensquiliberent.fr\/livre-Dans_la_disruption-484-1-1-0-1.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.editionslesliensquiliberent.fr\/livre-Dans_la_disruption-484-1-1-0-1.html', 'Dans la disruption']);\" >Dans la disruption<\/a>&#8221; (translation is mine):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This dominion of fact-driven lead to the watering down of the public power: what the Barbarians are attacking is the <em>legitimacy<\/em> of the public thing (res publica) \u2013 in that it is not appropriable by private initiatives. This attack by the Barbarians is a claim, if not of pure unlawfulness, but at least of the <em>vanity of law<\/em>, against which disruption allows to \u201cdebunk France\u201d by <em>multiplying loopholes<\/em> \u2013 and <em>subsequently<\/em> chaos.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>A friend of mine from the French <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corps_des_mines\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corps_des_mines', 'Corps de Mines']);\" >Corps de Mines<\/a> (think of it as an hybrid between Rhodes scholarship and HBS) told me six years ago that it is common knowledge in the administration that nowadays things indeed move too fast and that lawmakers have the hardest time trying to keep up with the latest trends (gig economy, cryptocurrencies, etc.) He now works for Facebook.<\/p>While many things have been broken in the meantime (Uber killed the taxi industry by stifling worker&#8217;s benefits; Airbnb destroyed the hotel industry by evading occupancy taxes), institutions are now fighting back (GDPR in Europe, San Francisco cease-and-desist orders for electric scooters.) Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/nov\/28\/elon-musk-underground-tunnel-los-angeles-lawsuit\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/nov\/28\/elon-musk-underground-tunnel-los-angeles-lawsuit', 'Musk now has to face boring rules']);\" >Musk now has to face <em>boring<\/em> rules<\/a> regarding who gets to dig holes underground (and he will lambast the government, while on the other hand reaping billions of dollars from government loans, government incentives and government contracts)<\/p>People are now waking up to the fact that government, despite its inefficiency, plays an invaluable role. Michael Lewis latest book, <em>The Fifth Risk<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2018\/11\/27\/homework-vs-public-choice.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2018\/11\/27\/homework-vs-public-choice.html', 'argues just that']);\" >argues just that<\/a> (sidenote: I become less and less in agreement with Nicholas Nassim Taleb, whose latest book <em>Skin in the game<\/em> completely miss the point.) As public servants (I&#8217;m a researcher in a federal lab), maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/monkey-cage\/wp\/2018\/11\/28\/citizens-feel-disconnected-from-government-if-they-knew-what-government-did-for-them-they-wouldnt\/?utm_term=.238d0f2254ce\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/monkey-cage\/wp\/2018\/11\/28\/citizens-feel-disconnected-from-government-if-they-knew-what-government-did-for-them-they-wouldnt\/?utm_term=.238d0f2254ce', 'it&#8217;s up to us']);\" >it&#8217;s up to us<\/a> to show all the great things we do for the rest of the population.<\/p>But should never grow impatient.
