The world is burning with fear, and the best thing we can do is the burn the fear with arts \u2013 and that’s the central appeal of Burning Man.<\/p>Burning Man is a ten-day long arts festival in the desert, in Black Rock City, NV (a 4 hours drive from San Fransisco) and usually held at the end of August, where people come for the peculiar experience, littered with real life arts. This event is among the only in the world where people do art for the sake of art<\/strong>, without galleries or commissioning needed, thanks to its sheer scale and captive audience (70,000 people over a week.) There are many groups of artists preparing arts year long, in the hope to touch the heart of others; some even get commissioned and get to build real big stuff. Some of them may be ephemeral, but their legacy lives on.<\/p>\n

Associated acts<\/h3>

The influence of Burning man runs deep, especially in the Bay Area. For example, the lights blinking on the Bay Bridge (Bay lights<\/strong>) where partly an offshoot of a Burning Man project<\/a> by Leo Villareal<\/a>, whereas the “Day For Night<\/strong>” built on Jim Campbell’s experience. The latter recently had an exhibition at the Hosfelt gallery<\/a> in San Francisco which was… illuminating.<\/p>The sculptor Marco Cochrane<\/a> is also famous for the Bliss series<\/a>, his large sculptures of iron mesh of dancing characters, found on Treasure Island and at festival in California.<\/p>\n

There was recently a very tiny retrospective of Burning Man arts at the Oakland Museum of California, No Spectator: The Art of Burning Man<\/a>. It didn’t render the scale of the event, but it allowed people to get a sense of what’s happening there, and tell the history of the event. <\/p>\n

Sacred art<\/h3>

Among the most fascinating experiences I had was visiting the Temple, where people come and gather, silently, bringing with them memorabilia of things and people they want to forget. The temple, no matter how magnificent it can be, also gets burned at the end of the even (The Temple of Grace<\/a> by David Best<\/a> was particularly intricate.)<\/p>\n

This secular rite is pretty moving, and the atmosphere there is really unique \u2013 a blend of joy and sadness.<\/p>But could it be that Burning Man inspires religious places around the Bay Area? I was recently at the Cathedral of Christ the Light<\/a> in Oakland, and I was struck by the common esthetics.<\/p>\n

Tt seems that the resemblance is spurious. Still, the spiritual aspect of Burning Man is a major part of the event \u2013 the ten principles of Burning Man<\/a> are not far from a reshuffling of the ten commandments, and to some extent the commissioning of arts can be compared to how the role of Catholic Church during Renaissance. Maybe someday cathedrals will be converted to acro-yoga studios; some in San Francisco or Amsterdam have already been converted to roller skate rinks<\/a> and concert venues<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Flaming lotus Girls<\/h3>

I recently joined an arts group related to Burning Man, the Flaming Lotus Girls<\/a>, which started making arts<\/a> based on metal welding and pyrotechnics in 2000. The group is mostly led by women artists, building their arts at the Box Shop<\/a> in San Francisco. Among the founding members are\u00a0Pouneh Mortazavi and Charles Gedeken<\/a> (who also builds arts on his own<\/a>.)<\/p>\n
