{"id":2418,"date":"2020-04-04T10:05:43","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T18:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/?p=2418"},"modified":"2020-04-05T09:31:34","modified_gmt":"2020-04-05T17:31:34","slug":"know-your-burning-man-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/2020\/04\/04\/know-your-burning-man-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Know your Burning Man art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The world is burning with fear, and the best thing we can do is the burn the fear with arts \u2013 and that&#8217;s the central appeal of Burning Man.<\/p>Burning Man is a ten-day long arts festival in the desert, in Black Rock City, NV (a 4 hours drive from San Fransisco) and usually held at the end of August, where people come for the peculiar experience, littered with real life arts. This event is among the only in the world where <strong>people do art for the sake of art<\/strong>, without galleries or commissioning needed, thanks to its sheer scale and captive audience (70,000 people over a week.) There are many groups of artists preparing arts year long, in the hope to touch the heart of others; some even get commissioned and get to build real big stuff. Some of them may be ephemeral, but their legacy lives on.<\/p>\n<h3>Associated acts<\/h3><p>The influence of Burning man runs deep, especially in the Bay Area. For example, the lights blinking on the Bay Bridge (<strong>Bay lights<\/strong>) where partly an <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.burningman.org\/2012\/12\/burning-man-arts\/global-art\/leo-villareal-the-bay-lights-flip-the-switch\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/journal.burningman.org\/2012\/12\/burning-man-arts\/global-art\/leo-villareal-the-bay-lights-flip-the-switch\/', 'offshoot of a Burning Man project']);\" >offshoot of a Burning Man project<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sftravel.com\/article\/3-light-artists-you-need-know-about\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.sftravel.com\/article\/3-light-artists-you-need-know-about', 'Leo Villareal']);\" >Leo Villareal<\/a>, whereas the &#8220;<strong>Day For Night<\/strong>&#8221; built on Jim Campbell&#8217;s experience. It didn&#8217;t render the scale of the event, but it allowed people to get a sense of what&#8217;s happening there, and tell the history of the event. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Sacred art<\/h3><p>Among the most fascinating experiences I had was visiting the Temple, where people come and gather, silently, bringing with them memorabilia of things and people they want to forget. Still, the spiritual aspect of Burning Man is a major part of the event \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/burningman.org\/culture\/philosophical-center\/10-principles\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/burningman.org\/culture\/philosophical-center\/10-principles\/', 'ten principles of Burning Man']);\" >ten principles of Burning Man<\/a> are not far from a reshuffling of the ten commandments, and to some extent the commissioning of arts can be compared to how the role of Catholic Church during Renaissance. Maybe someday cathedrals will be converted to acro-yoga studios; some in San Francisco or Amsterdam have already been converted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchof8wheels.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.churchof8wheels.com\/', 'roller skate rinks']);\" >roller skate rinks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paradiso.nl\/en\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.paradiso.nl\/en\/', 'concert venues']);\" >concert venues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Flaming lotus Girls<\/h3><p>I recently joined an arts group related to Burning Man, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flaminglotus.com\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.flaminglotus.com', 'Flaming Lotus Girls']);\" >Flaming Lotus Girls<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flaming_Lotus_Girls\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flaming_Lotus_Girls', 'started making arts']);\" >started making arts<\/a> based on metal welding and pyrotechnics in 2000. The group is mostly led by women artists, building their arts at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlesgadeken.com\/boxshopsf-home\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.charlesgadeken.com\/boxshopsf-home', 'Box Shop']);\" >Box Shop<\/a> in San Francisco. Among the founding members are\u00a0Pouneh Mortazavi and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlesgadeken.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.charlesgadeken.com\/', 'Charles Gedeken']);\" >Charles Gedeken<\/a> (who also builds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlesgadeken.com\/helix\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.charlesgadeken.com\/helix', 'arts on his own']);\" >arts on his own<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v65FJECO94Q\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>This year, there will probably not be a full project (the timeline is every 2\u20133 years), but we were happy to learn that the project for a temple selected this year will be built by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empyreantemple.com\/the-artists\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.empyreantemple.com\/the-artists', 'Sylvia Lisse']);\" >Sylvia Lisse<\/a>, who has been associated with Flaming Lotus Girls.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"eE5WczRZyu\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/journal.burningman.org\/2020\/01\/burning-man-arts\/brc-art\/empyrean-meet-your-2020-temple-artists\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/journal.burningman.org\/2020\/01\/burning-man-arts\/brc-art\/empyrean-meet-your-2020-temple-artists\/', 'Empyrean: Meet Your 2020 Temple &amp;
