by Meher McArthur, that I found at the shop <a href=\"https:\/\/paper-tree.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/paper-tree.com\/', 'Paper Tree']);\" >Paper Tree<\/a> in the Japan Town of San Fransisco (it&#8217;s one of my favorite shops; they always have stunning origami on display, some for sale, from many origamists featured in the book.)<\/p>Every page of the book is a delight, where a modern twists (abstraction, wet folding, tessellation) on origami always bring something very fresh.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2914\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-crease.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2914\" class=\"wp-image-2914 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-crease.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-crease.jpg 600w, http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/one-crease-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.origami-artist.com\/artwork\/one-crease\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.origami-artist.com\/artwork\/one-crease\/', 'One Crease']);\" >One Crease<\/a>, by Paul Jackson<\/p>\n<\/div><p>While reading the book and learning about <a href=\"https:\/\/organicorigami.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/organicorigami.com\/', 'Goran Konjevod']);\" >Goran Konjevod<\/a> (who seems to be a colleague from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory), I stumbled on the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/amandaghassaei.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/amandaghassaei.com\/', 'Amanda Ghassaei']);\" >Amanda Ghassaei<\/a>, who has created the <a href=\"https:\/\/origamisimulator.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/origamisimulator.org\/', 'Origami Simulator']);\" >Origami Simulator<\/a> and many other cool simulation tools producing mesmerizing results.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s fun to watch these vortex pairs glide around the screen, they kind of resemble little creatures.<\/p>When they collide they often trade partners and any unpaired vortices tend to get stuck.<\/p>For reference, each vortex pair is basically a 2D cross section of a smoke ring \ud83d\udca8 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AhoHPP6ZBb\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/t.co\/AhoHPP6ZBb', 'pic.twitter.com\/AhoHPP6ZBb']);\" >pic.twitter.com\/AhoHPP6ZBb<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Amanda Ghassaei (@amandaghassaei) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/amandaghassaei\/status\/1352605937077522434?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/x.com\/amandaghassaei\/status\/1352605937077522434?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw', 'January 22, 2021']);\" >January 22, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><!--more--><\/p>I&#8217;ve also learned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.garibiorigami.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.garibiorigami.com\/', 'Ilan Garibi']);\" >Ilan Garibi<\/a>, who like Konjevod is an expert in tessallation, where the paper is creased in advance many times to serve as a canvas, and produce patterns pixels by pixel.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 577px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/2d0efb_320ed8953824499d92ea8f4761aab978~mv2_d_4288_2848_s_4_2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_1314,h_880,fp_0.50_0.50,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01\/2d0efb_320ed8953824499d92ea8f4761aab978~mv2_d_4288_2848_s_4_2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"567\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Origami from tesselation by Ilan Garibi<\/p>\n<\/div><p>Not only there is incredible flexibility in the final pattern, but a proper use of the strength of the paper can allow to create very resistant structures out of mere paper (think of how a cardboard box can handle many pounds when the constraints are well designed; see &#8220;Exact Constraint: Machine Design Using Kinematic Processing&#8221; by Douglas Blanding [<a href=\"https:\/\/ocw.mit.edu\/courses\/mechanical-engineering\/2-76-multi-scale-system-design-fall-2004\/readings\/reading_l3.pdf\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','download','https:\/\/ocw.mit.edu\/courses\/mechanical-engineering\/2-76-multi-scale-system-design-fall-2004\/readings\/reading_l3.pdf']);\" >excerpt<\/a>].)<\/p>I found the video (on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UerxNyu147g\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UerxNyu147g', 'IEEE Spectrum video Friday']);\" >IEEE Spectrum video Friday<\/a>, always excellent source) about the use kirigami (origami with cuts) where they use the tensions caused by the cuts and fold in a 2D material in order to manipulate objects, without any machining needed and usign soft materials.<\/p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This Robot&apos;s Soft Gripper Was Inspired By Japanese Kirigami\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UerxNyu147g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
