Here&#8217;s a small selection: they&#8217;re mostly about love, for it is the most pleasant subject of poetry and something that philosophy isn&#8217;t capable to treat seriously (see <a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/2019\/07\/07\/poetry-as-philosophy-in-action\/\">Poetry as philosophy in action<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3044\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/waterfalls_thomasdanthony.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3044\" class=\" wp-image-3044\" src=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/waterfalls_thomasdanthony.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-3044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Waterfalls \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/thomasdanthony.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/thomasdanthony.com\/', 'Thomas Danthony']);\" >Thomas Danthony<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><p>We&#8217;ll start by English poets, with Lord Byron, a giant of poetry (where I came to by way of Stendhal):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>6.<br \/>\nPerhaps the workings of defiance stir<br \/>\nWithin me\u2014or perhaps a cold despair,<br \/>\nBrought on when ills habitually recur,<br \/>\nPerhaps a kinder clime, or purer air<br \/>\n(For even to this may change of soul refer,<br \/>\nAnd with light armour we may learn to bear),<br \/>\nHave taught me a strange quiet, which was not<br \/>\nThe chief companion of a calmer lot.<\/p>Lord Byron \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/43836\/epistle-to-augusta\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/43836\/epistle-to-augusta', 'Epistle to Augusta']);\" >Epistle to Augusta<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>The next one is his from his good friend Shelley, whose poetry I became aware reading Bertrand Russell:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>One word is too often profaned<br \/>\nFor me to profane it,<br \/>\nOne feeling too falsely disdained<br \/>\nFor thee to disdain it;<br \/>\nOne hope is too like despair<br \/>\nFor prudence to smother,<br \/>\nAnd pity from thee more dear<br \/>\nThan that from another.<\/p>I can give not what men call love,<br \/>\nBut wilt thou accept not<br \/>\nThe worship the heart lifts above<br \/>\nAnd the Heavens reject not,\u2014<br \/>\n<em>The desire of the moth for the star,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Of the night for the morrow,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The devotion to something afar<\/em><br \/>\n<em>From the sphere of our sorrow?<\/em><\/p>Percy Bysshe Shelley \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/45145\/to-\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/45145\/to-', 'To \u2014']);\" >To \u2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><p>Between English and American poetry stands W.H. Auden, who I discovered\u00a0 through Shoshana Zuboff, who made beautiful introduction to chapters using his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckgutman.com\/blog-1\/wh-auden-two-of-the-china-sonnets\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.huckgutman.com\/blog-1\/wh-auden-two-of-the-china-sonnets', 'Sonnets From China']);\" >Sonnets From China<\/a>. This piece is a beautiful reflection on what society has to lose if it doesn&#8217;t care for the natural world:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>2.<br \/>\nA well-kempt forest begs Our Lady\u2019s grace;<br \/>\nSomeone is not disgusted, or at least<br \/>\nIs laying bets upon the human race<br \/>\nRetaining enough decency to last;<br \/>\nThe trees encountered on a country stroll<br \/>\nReveal a lot about a country\u2019s soul.<\/p>A small grove massacred to the last ash,<br \/>\nAn oak with heart-rot, give away the show:<br \/>\nThis great society is going to smash;<br \/>\nThey cannot fool us with how fast they go,<br \/>\nHow much they cost each other and the gods.<br \/>\nA culture is no better than its woods.<\/p>W.H Auden \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/seamussweeney.net\/2017\/05\/14\/a-culture-is-no-better-than-its-woods-w-h-auden-bucolics\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/seamussweeney.net\/2017\/05\/14\/a-culture-is-no-better-than-its-woods-w-h-auden-bucolics\/', 'Bucolics']);\" >Bucolics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>I met Szymborska through a book a friend offered me, and I will be forever grateful for it. Her poems have a beautiful fluidity and great sense of humor, and &#8220;Advertisement&#8221; makes me think of what we are forced to do when describe ourselves on dating apps \u2013 or when you give up and embrace the flow:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>I\u2019m a tranquilizer.<br \/>\nI\u2019m effective at home.<br \/>\nI work in the office.<br \/>\nI can take exams<br \/>\non the witness stand.<br \/>\nI mend broken cups with care.<br \/>\nAll you have to do is take me,<br \/>\nlet me melt beneath your tongue,<br \/>\njust gulp me<br \/>\nwith a glass of water.<\/p>I know how to handle misfortune,<br \/>\nhow to take bad news.<br \/>\nI can minimize injustice,<br \/>\nlighten up God\u2019s absence,<br \/>\nor pick the widow\u2019s veil that suits your face.<br \/>\nWhat are you waiting for\u2014<br \/>\nhave faith in my chemical compassion.<\/p>You\u2019re still a young man\/woman.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not too late to learn how to unwind.<br \/>\nWho said<br \/>\nyou have to take it on the chin?<\/p>Let me have your abyss.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll cushion it with sleep.<br \/>\nYou\u2019ll thank me for giving you<br \/>\nfour paws to fall on.<\/p>Sell me your soul.<br \/>\nThere are no other takers.<\/p>There is no other devil anymore.<\/p>Wis\u0142awa Szymborska \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/50994\/advertisement-56d22e72ac47e\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/50994\/advertisement-56d22e72ac47e', 'Advertisement']);\" >Advertisement<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><p>I recently discovered Adam Zagajewski (another Polish poet) who plays with imagery and split thoughts with an exacting precision:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I haven\u2019t written a single poem<br \/>\nin months.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve lived humbly, reading the paper,<br \/>\npondering the riddle of power<br \/>\nand the reasons for obedience.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve watched sunsets<br \/>\n(crimson, anxious),<br \/>\nI\u2019ve heard the birds grow quiet<br \/>\nand night\u2019s muteness.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve seen sunflowers dangling<br \/>\ntheir heads at dusk, as if a careless hangman<br \/>\nhad gone strolling through the gardens.<br \/>\nSeptember\u2019s sweet dust gathered<br \/>\non the windowsill and lizards<br \/>\nhid in the bends of walls.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve taken long walks,<br \/>\ncraving one thing only:<br \/>\nlightning,<br \/>\ntransformation,<br \/>\nyou.<\/p>Adam Zagajewski \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/maddingsouls.livejournal.com\/84658.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/maddingsouls.livejournal.com\/84658.html', 'Transformation']);\" >Transformation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><p>As an epilogue on love, here&#8217;s a poem from Browning that I have cherished for many years:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I thought once how Theocritus had sung<br \/>\nOf the sweet years, the dear and wished for years,<br \/>\nWho each one in a gracious hand appears<br \/>\nTo bear a gift for mortals, old or young:<br \/>\nAnd, as I mused it in his antique tongue,<br \/>\nI saw, in gradual vision through my tears,<br \/>\nThe sweet, sad years, the melancholy years,<br \/>\nThose of my own life, who by turns had flung<br \/>\nA shadow across me.
