I want to share a small collection of resources that I had found immensely useful.<br \/>\n&#8220;Basic Lab Skills&#8221; by Steve Cundiff (<a href=\"http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/assets\/basic_skills_lab-cundiff.pdf\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','download','http:\/\/antoine.wojdyla.fr\/assets\/basic_skills_lab-cundiff.pdf']);\" title=\"Basic Lab Skills - PDF\"  target=\"_blank\">pdf<\/a>) is a short must-read for every experimental optician.<br \/>\n&#8220;Rule of thumb in Opto-Mechanics&#8221; if you have an access !<\/p>For every day presentation needs, I use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.getpaint.net\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.getpaint.net\/', 'paint.net']);\" target=\"_blank\">paint.net<\/a> for dealing with images, <a href=\"http:\/\/rsbweb.nih.gov\/ij\/download.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/rsbweb.nih.gov\/ij\/download.html', 'imageJ']);\" target=\"_blank\">imageJ<\/a> when it get more complicated and <a href=\"http:\/\/inkscape.org\/download\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/inkscape.org\/download\/', 'Inkscape']);\" target=\"_blank\">Inkscape<\/a> when it has to be vectorial (i.e. Latex).<br \/>\nI write my reports with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xm1math.net\/texmaker\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.xm1math.net\/texmaker\/', 'TexMaker']);\" title=\"TexMaker\"  target=\"_blank\">TexMaker<\/a>; it is not the best interface, but is has the advantage of being free, having a built-in viewer and supporting utf8, which makes it easier for accents and some special symbols and is more future-oriented (I hate TeXnicCenter, and I paid for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inlage.com\/home\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.inlage.com\/home', 'Inlage']);\" title=\"Inlage\"  target=\"_blank\">Inlage<\/a>, which proved to be instable : several crashes later, I gave up).<\/p>To manage my bibliography, I use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mendeley.com\/download-mendeley-desktop\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.mendeley.com\/download-mendeley-desktop\/', 'Mendeley']);\" target=\"_blank\">Mendeley<\/a> , which is great to keep it organized, synced and perform search many articles.<\/p>To sync the code over all my computer, I use <a href=\"http:\/\/git-scm.com\/downloads\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/git-scm.com\/downloads', 'git']);\" target=\"_blank\">git<\/a> (it requires a bit a training; see the <a href=\"http:\/\/git-scm.com\/book\/en\/Getting-Started\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/git-scm.com\/book\/en\/Getting-Started', 'tutorial']);\" target=\"_blank\">tutorial<\/a>).<\/p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">References books <\/span><\/p>My favorite reference book on general optics is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fundamentals-Photonics-Series-Applied-Optics\/dp\/0471358320\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fundamentals-Photonics-Series-Applied-Optics\/dp\/0471358320', 'Fundamental of Photonic']);\" target=\"_blank\">Fundamental of Photonic<\/a>s&#8221; by Saleh & Teich. It is mush easier to read and up-to-date than the famous &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Principles-Optics-Electromagnetic-Propagation-Interference\/dp\/0521642221\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Principles-Optics-Electromagnetic-Propagation-Interference\/dp\/0521642221', 'Principle of Optics']);\" target=\"_blank\">Principle of Optics<\/a>&#8221; by Born & Wolf, which I find cumbersome to read in sometimes needlessly obfuscated. For general understanding of optics, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Optics-4th-Edition-Eugene-Hecht\/dp\/0805385665\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Optics-4th-Edition-Eugene-Hecht\/dp\/0805385665', 'Optics']);\" title=\"Optics - Amazon\"  target=\"_blank\">Optics<\/a>&#8221; by E. \u00a0Heicht is cool. For general electromagnetism, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Classical-Electrodynamics-Third-Edition-Jackson\/dp\/047130932X\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Classical-Electrodynamics-Third-Edition-Jackson\/dp\/047130932X', 'Classical Electrodynamics']);\" title=\"Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics - Amazon\"  target=\"_blank\">Classical Electrodynamics<\/a>&#8221; dy J. D. Jackson is the reference, but I really don&#8217;t like it. You&#8217;d rather read &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Electricity-Magnetism-Edward-M-Purcell\/dp\/1107014026\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1383157581&sr=1-1&keywords=purcell\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Electricity-Magnetism-Edward-M-Purcell\/dp\/1107014026\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1383157581&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=purcell', 'Electricity and Electromagnetism']);\" title=\"E.M Purcell's Electricity and Magnetism - Amazon\"  target=\"_blank\">Electricity and Electromagnetism<\/a>&#8221; by E.M Purcell.\u00a0If you speak French, and want to go further, reading &#8220;Electromagn\u00e9tisme et relativit\u00e9&#8221; \u00a0J.-M. Raimond\u00a0ENS course is a good idea (available free <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phys.ens.fr\/cours\/notes-de-cours\/jmr\/electromagnetisme.htm\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.phys.ens.fr\/cours\/notes-de-cours\/jmr\/electromagnetisme.htm', 'here']);\" title=\"Electromagn\u00e9tisme et Relativit\u00e9 - JM Raimond\"  target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>For Lasers and gaussian optics, Siegman&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lasers-Anthony-E-Siegman\/dp\/0935702113\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lasers-Anthony-E-Siegman\/dp\/0935702113', 'Laser']);\" title=\"Siegman's Lasers - Amazon\"  target=\"_blank\">Laser<\/a>&#8221; is the reference. Very intereting information on lasers can be read on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repairfaq.org\/sam\/laserfaq.htm\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.repairfaq.org\/sam\/laserfaq.htm', 'Sam&#8217;s Laser FAQ']);\" title=\"Sam's Laser FAQ\"  target=\"_blank\">Sam&#8217;s Laser FAQ<\/a>.<br \/>\nFor Extreme UV and Soft X-Rays, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Soft-X-Rays-Extreme-Ultraviolet-Radiation\/dp\/052102997X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1383158523&sr=1-1&keywords=EUV+soft\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Soft-X-Rays-Extreme-Ultraviolet-Radiation\/dp\/052102997X\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1383158523&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=EUV+soft', 'Soft X-Rays and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation&#8221;']);\" >Soft X-Rays and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation&#8221;<\/a> by David Attwood is very interesting.<\/p>For optical engineering and technique, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Optical-Testing-Series-Applied-Optics\/dp\/0471484040\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Optical-Testing-Series-Applied-Optics\/dp\/0471484040', 'Optical Shop testing']);\" title=\"Optical Shop Testing - Amazon\"  target=\"_blank\">Optical Shop testing<\/a>&#8221; by D. Voeltz. It is far better than another one my colleagues refer to, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Numerical-Simulation-Propagation-Examples-Monograph\/dp\/0819483265\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Numerical-Simulation-Propagation-Examples-Monograph\/dp\/0819483265', 'Numerical Simulation of Optical Wave Propagation']);\" title=\"Numerical simulation of optical wave propagation - Amazon\"  target=\"_blank\">Numerical Simulation of Optical Wave Propagation<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 by JD Schmidt. I found an interesting discussion on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcuswinter.de\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.marcuswinter.de\/', 'Nerd&#8217;s Rage']);\" title=\"Nerd's Rage\"  target=\"_blank\">Nerd&#8217;s Rage<\/a> blog (especially\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcuswinter.de\/archives\/1351\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.marcuswinter.de\/archives\/1351', 'the article about on scalar diffraction']);\" title=\"SCALAR DIFFRACTION - HUYGENS, FRESNEL, FRAUNHOFER\"  target=\"_blank\">the article about on scalar diffraction<\/a>)<\/p>For Ab-Initio (exact, FDTD) simulations, you can\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ab-initio.mit.edu\/wiki\/index.php\/Meep_Tutorial\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/ab-initio.mit.edu\/wiki\/index.php\/Meep_Tutorial', 'learn how to use']);\" title=\"MEEP - tutorial\"  target=\"_blank\">learn how to use<\/a> the free, open-source software\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ab-initio.mit.edu\/wiki\/index.php\/Meep_download\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/ab-initio.mit.edu\/wiki\/index.php\/Meep_download', 'MEEP']);\" title=\"MEEP - Download\"  target=\"_blank\">MEEP<\/a>. It has been developed, among others, by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/math.mit.edu\/~stevenj\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/math.mit.edu\/~stevenj\/', 'Steven G. Johnson']);\" title=\"Steven G. Johnson - MIT\"  target=\"_blank\">Steven G. Johnson<\/a>, the same guy who implemented\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fftw.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.fftw.org\/', 'FFTW']);\" title=\"FFTW\"  target=\"_blank\">FFTW<\/a> (Fastest Fourier Transform in the West), used by Matlab to perform FFTs.\u00a0Since it is working with \u00a0Linux, and you may use Windows as you your primary OS, I recommend you to use the free\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/wiki\/Downloads\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/wiki\/Downloads', 'VirtualBox']);\" title=\"VirtualBox - Download\"  target=\"_blank\">VirtualBox<\/a> to create a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/', 'Ubuntu']);\" title=\"Ubuntu\"  target=\"_blank\">Ubuntu<\/a> virtual machine , and then install meep with a simple &#8220;sudo apt-get install meep&#8221; (I had some issues with hdf5, you might have the same, but they can be solved:)<\/p>For optical engineering, you may want to learn how to use Zemax, using the manual which comprise a very good tutorial (it can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/taos.asiaa.sinica.edu.tw\/~andrew\/zemaxmanual.pdf\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','download','http:\/\/taos.asiaa.sinica.edu.tw\/~andrew\/zemaxmanual.pdf']);\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for example).<\/p>(If for some reason you cannot buy a book, you may want to check on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freebookspot.es\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.freebookspot.es\/', 'freebookspot']);\" target=\"_blank\">freebookspot<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eknigu.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.eknigu.org\/', 'eknigu']);\" target=\"_blank\">eknigu<\/a> if they&#8217;re available;-)<\/p><em>I&#8217;ll try to get that list updated !<\/em><\/p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">engineer guidelines ;steps of a projects (computers, dessins bureau)<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, when trying something new in optics, it is very hard to know where to begin, and find knowledgeable source.
